GEO-Accumulation Index for Heavy Metals in Groundwater: a Study of Bompai and Sharada Industrial Estates, Kano Metropolis, Nigeria

The level of concentration heavy metal in soil is detrimental to groundwater quality Sharada and Bompai industrial areas. A total 40 sampling points were selected from both two digested samples analysed for As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Co, Ni Pb using Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) machine. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) was used model present the spatiotemporal changes pollution sources factors affecting levels pollution. Pollution water potential risks introduced by accumulation assessed Geo-accumulation index. Results indicated that Cadmium Arsenic are most vulnerable around with mean 0.2-0.4/mg/l 1.3-1.6 mg/l respectively, index mapping showed Arsenic, Copper have high ranging strong very (0.99-1.48), (0.01-0.22) (0.27-0.33) Cobalt moderate contamination (wet season) (-0.39-0.12) while lead Chromium has least (uncontaminated). GIS modelling all metals found areas but among them Cd more concentrated. South-western part study area confronts serious pollution, hence need treatment before drinking avoid dangers associated metals.
